It is simply companies with bad quality control, allowing the latex to sour, and being too cheap to create a fresh batch that does not smell. People who end up buying these rugs need to return them to the stores who sold them to them... because this is a manufacturing flaw, and I personally believe they are harmful. When a smell makes you leave a room - it's a sign that it is bad for you.
